Each year, I use the same base garland on our Christmas mantel — and have for about a decade — and I embellish it a little differently each year to compliment our great room Christmas tree. I reuse a lot of components, tend to stick with some of my favorite methods and inclusions, but it has certainly evolved over the years. While I have our Christmas trees set up and decorated for the upcoming season, I haven’t tackled the garland on the mantel just yet, and in anticipation (and personal prep), I thought it would be fun to take a look back on our holiday fireplaces over the past several years.

Minimalist, drapey cedar garland with thin velvet ribbon has been in for several years now, but I just can’t resist going full on maximalist on our Christmas mantel. Also, as an FYI, I’m always asked about how I secure the garland. It’s definitely the lazy approach, but the answer is — I don’t. I bend it and try to tuck some behind the TV, but our garland has lasted on luck and prayer all these years. 😉

2019
In 2019, I went for a more traditional feel than previous years and focused on tartan and plaids in green, red, blue, gold and silver. It’s the only time I used the gold fern stems and looking back, I love them! You can see the full 2019 Christmas Home Tour HERE.

2018
In 2018, I had a really non-traditional teal(ish) green, black, and white color scheme. I used more ornaments in this mantel garland and loved the drama of the black satin ribbon. I remember thinking it was super progressive for the time, especially at the height of white trees and all white Christmas decor. You can see the full 2018 Christmas Home Tour HERE.
The Garland Components:
- Live cedar clippings
- Live pine clippings
- Ornaments
- Live magnolia clippings

2017
In my earlier years, I focused on more glitz and traditional methods of embellishing and used live cedar (messy and dries out), ornaments, and woven in mesh ribbon. You can see my wine and champagne Christmas color scheme this year in the full 2017 Christmas Home Tour HERE.
The Garland Components:
- Live cedar clippings
- Ornaments
- Ribbon
- Faux greenery leaf picks

I absolutely cannot wait for Home Tour day this year, coming mid-next month. Be sure to subscribe to emails to be alerted when it goes live!
