We made an impromptu trip to Amicalola Falls yeste We made an impromptu trip to Amicalola Falls yesterday to picnic and hike. Less than 30 minutes from our house, it’s the tallest waterfall in Georgia — Dave had never been and it had been years since I had. I’ll be honest, I didn’t plan to make to hike the inclined path and then make my way up an additional strenuous 604 steps to the tippy top, but Eliza wanted to keep going… so we did. And we made it. I don’t know if I was more impressed with her at 3 years old or myself 😂 She made it all the way up unassisted and we took turns carrying her back down — we talked about teamwork, endurance, and perseverance. I love a large bedside table — more surface, mor I love a large bedside table — more surface, more statement… but our bedroom is the only space that will accommodate a large nightstand. The other bedrooms, like Eliza’s bedroom, demanded pieces that were smaller in stature and on the more narrow side. In my efforts of decluttering and minimizing, I ha In my efforts of decluttering and minimizing, I haven’t just wanted to have less, I’ve wanted to SEE less. Especially in the kitchen. But, when you use your kitchen as heavily as we do and the countertops pretty much only hold functional items to begin with, it can get tricky. After identifying a few solutions, along with lightening the load within the drawers and cabinets, I was able to get a cleaner aesthetic, without sacrificing functionality. BTW- if I hadn’t limited myself to more finite space allocations (like downsizing my towel drawer and only allowing… say 20 kitchen towels instead of 40 (haha), I wouldn’t have been successful in making enough room (and breathable room!) to allow for more things to be stored. I’ve had to shift my mindset, change habits, and I’ve had to shift my mindset, change habits, and come to peace with parting from some of my most deeply ingrained practices to actually move forward and lessen the load within the walls of our home. I’ve held on to far too many things for hypothetical future occasions and that, along with therapeutic (and hobby) shopping at a rate that has outpaced my decluttering landed me feeling LITERALLY unwell. Our top priority is to progress our spaces to a point of comfort and then work toward positive systems to maintain what feels good and well within my limits to prevent future overwhelm. The office closet houses pillow inserts and covers, gift wrap supplies, office supply extras, Eliza gifts, spare throw blankets, etc., etc., etc. When I outgrew my storage solution, I told myself it was ok to pile until I could make time to declutter and reorganize. Instead, the pile grew, making it ok for new piles to form. Nothing was being dealt with, and while it was upsetting to think of parting with things I still potentially liked, NONE of it was being used because it couldn’t be accessed and I I had no clue what I had. I tackled this space once and for all and somewhere between contractor bag 4-6, I was able to start being more honest with myself.
