Hot and Spicy Chicken Dip — Add it to the Menu for the Big Game!

I first tasted this Hot and Spicy Chicken Dip at a holiday party years ago. When I found out the individual components that were included in the dish, I was quite surprised. But melded together, the ingredients result in a meaty, tangy and spicy dip that is hearty and delicious.

This Hot and Spicy Chicken Dip is a great addition to any festive party spread, from game days to holiday parties. Back in the day, since the dip is best served warm, I served it in a chafing dish. Today, a crockpot is the perfect vessel to keep the dip warm for serving.

How is this Hot and Spicy Chicken Dip Served?

I serve this dish in a slow cooker so that it can be kept warm, with the dippers served alongside in a napkin-lined basket or bowl. Corn chips provide the best taste combo with the dip. Since this is a hefty dip, the heartier the dipper served, the better! Some of my favorites to use are:

  • Fritos Scoops/Corn Chips
  • Tostitos Scoops
  • Round tortilla chips
  • Trader Joe’s Corn Dippers

Can The “Spicy” in this Recipe Be Adjusted?

Of course! There are a couple of different ways to add more heat to the Hot and Spicy Chicken Dip. You can add more jalapeno peppers or include the jalapeno seeds.

But it will be difficult to lessen the heat factor, once the peppers have been added. I like to start out with two peppers and if I find they are milder, I will add more. You can also add diced pickled jalapenos, which typically aren’t as hot as fresh jalapenos.

I like to serve sliced jalapenos alongside the dip if some want to add to their dipper for an extra spicy bite!

Prep Time 25 minutes
Cook Time 20 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 lb. boneless, skinless chicken breasts (approximately 2 large breasts)
  • 1 qt. chicken broth (optional)
  • seasoning of choice (My favorite is Trader Joe's Citrus Garlic blend.)
  • 1 large onion
  • 1/2 head cabbage
  • 2 Tbsp olive oil
  • 1 small bottle of ketchup (14 oz. = 1 2/3 cups)
  • 2 -3 jalapeno peppers (pickled jalapeno peppers may be substituted)

Instructions

Prepare Chicken

  1. Place the chicken breasts in a large cooking pot and cover with chicken broth or water. Add seasoning of choice to the chicken.

  2. Cover the pot and bring to a boil on medium high heat.

  3. Decrease heat to medium low and simmer until the chicken is done (approximately 15 minutes.)

  4. When the chicken has finished cooking, drain off the liquid.

  5. Shred the chicken with a hand mixer in the cooking pot. (Or dump the drained chicken into a KitchenAid stand mixer bowl and shred the chicken.)

Prepare Vegetables

  1. Thinly slice one half head of cabbage.

  2. Peel and thinly slice one large onion.

  3. Heat 2 Tbsp. of olive oil in a large skillet on medium high heat.

  4. Add the sliced cabbage and onion to the skillet and saute until tender, stirring occasionally, until done.

  5. Chop the jalapeno peppers into small pieces.

Assemble The Dip

  1. Add the shredded chicken, cooked cabbage and onion, and the chopped jalapeno peppers to the slow cooker.

  2. Add the ketchup and mix to incorporate.

  3. Set slow cooker to low heat.

  4. Serve the dip with corn chip dippers of choice.
