How I Style a Coffee Table (Without Overthinking It)
If you’ve ever stared at your coffee table like “why does mine not look like Pinterest,” same. Here’s what actually works for me:
- Consider your shape. For rectangle coffee tables, I like to separate them into thirds or quarters. For square coffee tables, quadrants.
- Start with a base(s). A tray or a stack of books grounds everything and makes it feel intentional. I aim for larger items and any smaller items go in a tray, bowl, or on top of a stack of books. No small items directly on the table.
- Add height variation. Mix something low (coasters, beads) with something taller (vase, candle, ginger jar).
- Include at least one “interesting” piece. This is your conversation starter. Something sculptural, quirky, or just unexpected. On one coffee table, I have antlers we picked up from our trip to Wyoming and on another, I have a book with dogs wearing clothes. These are the kinds of things that make me smile, evoke memories, and keep it personal.
- Leave breathing room. Not every inch needs something. The negative space is what makes it feel calm instead of cluttered.

Bringing Back Blue & White (And Why I’ll Never Be Over It)
I’ve been slowly reincorporating blue and white back into our living room, and TBH, it just works every time. I have vintage and inherited blue and white, along with store finds from the past decade. It’s classic, adds contrast, is an easy way to incorporate color if you’re just starting to move beyond neutrals, and always feels fresh whether it’s January or July.
Among some of the things I’ve brought back out to mix in are small ginger jars, blue and white ceramic bowls, special and original blue and white (like you, bookshelf monkeys 😉 ), and subtle patterned pieces alongside neutrals. It adds a little more polish to some of the organic textures that I’m still loving, and makes the space feel a little more collected and a little less one-note.

What My Coffee Table Looks Like Right Now
Real life version:
- Stacks of books — the easiest, most fail-proof way to outfit the coffee table. Plus, each stack is a potential base for smaller items.
- A small tray to corral with a candle I actually burn.
- Blue and white accent moment.
- Coral to punctuate the season.
- Candy dish — which gets used and is evidence that our living room is for living.
- Usually something slightly out of place courtesy of my daughter (like a rock/nature collection from the backyard, a kids meal toy, or some sort of craft/art project) 🙃
It shifts as we live in it and that’s kind of the whole goal.

I still love the juxtaposition of our dining room, marrying both tradition and modern aesthetic, and bringing the blue and white to layer in just capitalizes on that already established vibe.

Dutch oven) I have front and center! I love keeping my most used, nicest cookware pieces out and ready for use and 1. wanted a smaller size than my huge Le Creuset, and 2. decided to opt for a color. Affordable Blue & White Finds I’m Loving
If you’re in your blue-and-white era too (welcome), I couldn’t resist sharing some of my favorite budget-friendly ginger jars and porcelain pieces on Amazon. Some of the deals on these are seriously wild. They’re are perfect for styling on a coffee table or ottoman tray; adding a pop of pattern to shelves, sideboards, consoles, and cabinets; and mix well with books and candles for that layered look.
And yes, many of them are under $30, which makes it dangerously easy to “just add one more.”

You don’t need a full room makeover to make your space feel new. Sometimes you just need to make a few swaps for a different/more complex color story, add one or two layered accessories, or bring in something that feels a little more you. At the end of the day, I want our home to feel personal, not perfect. Loved and lived in. The coffee table is going to get used. Things will get moved. Life will happen on it. But having a few go-to pieces that make it feel pulled together in the in-between moments… that’s the sweet spot.
