Seasonal decorating- for fall you haul out the pumpkins, for Christmas you bring out the twinkling lights, and for spring, you put it all away… but what about summer? More than any other time of year, this season is reliant on decor that doesn’t necessarily say summer, but makes you feel the season. If that doesn’t make sense, take one glimpse of Amanda S. Gluck of Fashionable Hostess‘ home and you will see what I mean. Living in Miami, Amanda is an expert on all things summer. For those of you who only see high temps briefly throughout the year, I am so pleased that she has joined me today to share her tips on how she achieves that south Florida vibe that can be implemented, regardless of where you live. Today, she’s sharing some of her best summer decorating tips.

When I was 13, I would flip through my Teen magazine until I found the latest room spotlight. Without access to the internet for inspiration and having little interest in the “grown up” spaces featured in my mother’s magazines, I basically lived for that one spread each month. I loved pouring over every detail and taking mental note of how each amateur decorator (seemingly way cooler than myself) organized her lip gloss and the creative way she would display her cd collection. (This is actually how my wall of “Got Milk” ads was born, but that’s for another time haha). Well, when I first connected with Amanda, I spent an embarrassing a healthy amount of time on her site, getting all the “feels”, reminiscent to those of my teen-mag perusing former self. She hosts, she styles, she decorates, and each project she takes on is so beautifully thought out, I always have to go back to see if I can pick up on any other little details I may have missed in my first pass. (Kind of like watching Forrest Gump- I ALWAYS see something new I didn’t pick up on before). I was thrilled to be featured on her site recently in her Dinner Party Spotlight series; if you missed it, you can check out my blue and yellow summer table HERE. Without further ado, here are some easy-to-implement summer decorating tips from Amanda.
Summer Decorating Tips from FH
KN: A lot of people transition their décor from summer to fall, fall to winter, and winter to spring. For many though, the spring to summer transition is a bit more tricky. How would you describe your summer update- minimal or overhaul?
FH: Since I live in Miami I have a summery-vibe in my house year round! But in the summer months especially, I make an extra effort to focus on my outdoor space with fresh bright pillows, new plant pots, etc. We love to BBQ so I love finding new lanterns or even adding string lights to a summer dinner party!
KN: What areas in your home get the most drastic seasonal makeovers?
FH: The area in my home that gets the most drastic seasonal makeover is my family room. I update pillows, throw blankets, accessories, and even my flower choices!
KN: For those who love neutrals, what is your advice on making your home feel like summer?
FH: I am a lover of neutrals, so while I never go too crazy with color, I love to change up textures. i.e. I love linens for summer!!
KN: What are your summer entertaining essentials?
FH: My summer entertaining essentials are: 1. a great ice bucket, 2. acrylic glassware so you can have drinks by the pool, and 3. kabob sticks because we love to grill.
KN: What summer décor trends are you currently crushing on?
FH: Summer decor trends I love: stripes {especially beach towels}, bright prints {especially for pillows}, wild flower arrangements, and festive bar carts!
NOTE: You can see some of Amanda’s bar carts HERE.
KN: Any last tips or advice to those who are getting their homes ready for summer?
FH: When planning for summer, think casual, lightweight, pops of bright colors!
