Eliza’s “Big Girl” Bedroom Reveal

It’s only been “coming soon!” for the past two years but Eliza’s big girl bedroom is finally finished and ready to share! Wow. I almost can’t even believe it. She’s lived with it in stages since we removed her crib and I think she kind of assumes coming home to regular surprise changes in her bedroom is a normal thing now, haha. It was… a journey… but I’m thrilled with the result. And most of all, Eliza adores her new purple bedroom.

For as simple as it was, the time that it took to finish Eliza’s bedroom was beyond silly. There were no wall features added, no light installation needed, no window treatment changes… there wasn’t even paint. Most of the major furniture even stayed the same since the nursery was intentionally planned to grow with Eliza (and it worked pretty seamlessly). But, there was one hangup (and I’m pretty sure most of you have heard me complain about it more than once, haha). That dang bed.

I ordered her bed back in 2021. The initial bed took a while but once it started the logistical process, it got lost and stayed lost and then it took some time before the retailer would admit that it was lost and would probably never be un-lost. So, they ordered another bed. By this time, the materials were on backorder… once it was finally constructed, it made the long trek through the delivery process. But, when the delivery drivers showed up and started taking it off their truck each piece had been carelessly demolished worst than the last. They said it had been previously handled so poorly, nothing was salvageable. So… the bed was ordered for a THIRD time. Honestly, had I not ordered the mattress when I ordered the bed frame, I would have gone with an alternative a long time ago. But, the mattress with no box spring was in a specific “full” size and I couldn’t find anything that would accommodate my vision with what I already had, besides that trouble bed. Now that it’s here, it’s 100% worth it (seriously I adore her bed — the height, construction, fabric… everything) and I won’t miss the sweat and frustration of trying to make a bed that is just a mattress on the floor 😉

Eliza’s Purple Bedroom

So, enough of that. Regardless of how long it took us to get here, we’re here! And here is the end result.

It’s so silly but one of my disappointments was that (again, back in 2021) I had planned her Christmas tree scheme to follow what should have been a fairly lived in purple bedroom by that time. I also purchased what I needed on major sale after the holidays that year, way in advance. When the second bed showed up damaged, it was evident that her purple Christmas tree would just have to stand alone without a finished bedroom. Bummer. But, maybe we can just use our imagination to think of how sweet her purple tree would have looked in her purple bedroom 😉

Little Girl Bedroom Details

Eliza has a playroom so that’s where we try to keep her toys. But, she has a ton of stuffed animals, a bookshelf full of books, blankets, bags, and more. So, it was important to have attractive storage beyond the closet and dresser. And, I planned for a lot of it.

I have one of each size of THESE baskets now, but they’re so well constructed, they work well for constant handling. I have the largest size (it’s big!) in our bedroom and the medium and small in her room for some of her furry friends and dolls. They’re also on sale right now 😉 Also, they have since come out with a slight color variation in “natural” that I think I like even more. You can find that one HERE. Use code UPGRADE for an additional 20% off the sale price of any of those baskets right now.

Her trunk was a bit of a splurge (especially for a little girl’s bedroom), but my hope is that it will be with us for a really long time. It’s well made, so pretty in person, and the hinges are safe enough for Eliza to open it without me worrying it may slam on her head. We keep all her bags, back packs, and travel pouches in here. It’s also on sale right now for 20% off with code UPGRADE HERE.

Even though I designed her little girl bedroom, I still wanted Eliza to feel attached to it and feel like it was personal to her. We went with a purple bedroom because purple is Eliza’s favorite color (or at least it was in 2021 — it changes any time you ask her now, haha).  But, I worked to incorporate things she loves. Even the art above her bed was based on things she likes.

And even though when you look at it, you see a purple bedroom, I didn’t actually go too heavy on the purple. We stuck to accents, accessories, and art in purple and lavender tones. I collected her bedding and grabbed the pieces while they were on sale. Each of the bedding pieces are still available but most are sold out in the purple tones.

For a much less expensive alternative, we also use THESE striped jersey sheets in the lavender and white stripe. They look great just paired with a basic quilt and have been fabulous over the past year! They’ve been washed a bajillion times so I’m probably due to grab a back-up set soon…

I planned for one nightstand, ordered it, and was really impressed (it may not look like it, but it’s REALLY heavy). I loved the white with woven fronts and brass accents, which kind of marry all the tones and finishes of her room. But, months later, I found a second identical nightstand at the West Elm outlet in perfect condition and brought it home, too. They’re currently on sale online HERE.

I love LOVE THESE Kate Spade Lamps but couldn’t justify the cost in here. With other splurges, I settled on THESE purple table lamps — the price can’t be beat in comparison and they come in a ton of colors!

I had also originally planned on THIS gold crown tray but when I found THIS way cheaper alternative, it was an easy decision. More often than not, you’ll find mini flashlights in here 😉

She loves a snow globe for all holidays and West Elm had THIS rainbow one on sale before Christmas — perfect for ALL the time. I thought it was being clearanced out, but they brought it back HERE.

Her art was stacked in my bedroom for the past year so I was stoked — not just to finally get it hung — but to get it out of my room. Each of these pieces have multiple color-tone options, which is perfect if you’re wanting to go more tonal for a gallery! It was tricky centering the gallery above the bed with the long picture frame molding, and I don’t think I could explain my method if I tried, but it worked, haha.

Her full dresser setup is just as it was when her little girl bedroom was a nursery — just without the changing basket. I purchased the dresser years ago, hoping it would grow with her, and I’m so glad I did instead of having to switch out major furniture pieces.

Along with the hat (above), you can spy a small white dream catcher which was a souvenir from our trip out west. Her window treatments remained the same and have served us so well over the past several years.

The art that used to be above her bookshelf was moved to her playroom (see the playroom HERE), and the lyrics above her crib were moved above the bookshelf.

And also love that no matter how many stuffed animals she has, she’s an “equal opportunist” and shows each and every one of them love. She sleeps with a different one each night.

Another piece that I was relieved to finally get set was her rug. THIS ONE is the 6×9 version, and it was a deal! It’s so pretty in person and comes in several sizes. Her former neutral chunky rug has been relocated back down to the guest bedroom. I don’t typically like thinner rugs on carpet and I don’t know if it’s because this one is weighted down at several points, but we’ve had zero problems with wrinkles or edges wanting to fold up.

I’m thrilled with the outcome and hope she loves it for years to come. I know at some point she may not appreciate my taste as much as she develops her own, but I hope she’ll be able to look back and appreciate the love and thought that went into creating her first (big) little girl bedroom.

Making her tight Jack and Jill bathroom more functional is on the “list” but that will be for a future year 😉 The kitchen and breakfast nook will be coming soon and of course, our big 2023 project — the pool — will follow some time in the next several months!

This room turned out beautifully and was worth the wait!! How have you found the cream colored bed to be holding up? I’d love to do something similar for my little lady (3 in August!) but am a little nervous about potential stains over time?

Thank you for taking the time to stop by and for your kind note! The bed has held up beautifully and we’ve had no issues with stains or wear. I can definitely say that I’m happy with the bed decision, once it was received. I hope you have a wonderful time planning your daughter’s “big girl” room!
