What is probably my favorite annual blog day of the year is here — today, I’m sharing this year’s full Christmas Home Tour for 2021! Each year, I try to work with what I have — which admittedly is now quite a lot, in terms of ornaments, at least — repurpose, restyle, and re-room decor, and concept color schemes/themes I haven’t yet shared before. I may add a few pieces, but the main focus each year is on mixing different colors together and adding new ribbon patterns for a fresh look. I try to embellish what I have, I don’t use nearly all of my collection, and sometimes, I revive pieces I haven’t set out in three years or so. Also, I typically have in my mind at least a year in advance what I want to accomplish with our main living room tree. I knew this time last year that in 2021, I wanted a red and gold Christmas tree. So, that’s what I did.
Over the past year, several rooms have seen transformations or updates so I’m really enjoying having subtle new settings for our holiday looks. There are even a few updates we’ve made that I haven’t yet shared until today’s tour.
Each room has its own holiday vibe, with the open spaces being more coordinated than other rooms. Some are simple, some are classic, some are colorful and some are nostalgic. As I say each year, thank you for visiting, thank you for “being here”, and thank you for taking the time to check out what we’ve been up to this season. Come on in.

The Entry
Welcome! I’ve really leaned in to more simplicity over the past couple of years and I love repurposing pillows from fall and bringing them into winter — either by relocating them or by mixing and matching them with other colors or textures.
With full sized Christmas trees located in each room on either side of the entry (the dining room and conversation room), I opted to keep the entry more minimal. I brought in some more natural pillows that I used in the living room this fall (THIS sage green one has been used in just about every season this year The windowpane pillow from my go-to pillow shop is no longer available but they have some serious stunners in stock right now! And… I purchased even MORE of those favorite faux magnolia stems (HERE) for a simple but statement arrangement since I shared earlier in the fall. Each year, I scalp live magnolia stems where I can but it’s hard to keep up with them. After investing in a collection of faux, I loved them so much, I went back for more. I have seven stems in this big arrangement.

The Dining Room
And now, the room I was most excited to see come together, decked for the holidays! This past year, our dining room went from baby blue (remember last year’s icy twinning Christmas tree look HERE?) to a dramatic dark charcoal (see room reveal and details HERE). The color is “Iron Ore” by Sherwin Williams and it goes from looking like a dark warm charcoal to a soft black.

I would have loved to have seen a natural green tree in here, but in working with what I had, I used a needle-y flocked tree we had in the basement and used in this space last year. Well, it may have been the same tree, but the dining room looks totally different. I leaned into the flocked look and played up the traditional crystal that was already present, and here’s how the dining room looks this season.

For the table centerpiece, I went more pared down that I usually do, but I gathered lots of metallic and mirrored stars (previously crafted into a star mobile in Eliza’s nursery and used as the primary focal point in last year’s bedroom tree) in a pale, natural, organic bowl. This entire room plays back and forth between glam and casual — from the concrete style lamps and wool jute rug to the more glitzy chandelier and mirror. So, this centerpiece was an opportunity to dress up, but dress down in the same juxtaposed fashion.
There’s a lot going on on the sideboard just behind the table, so I didn’t want the table in the forefront to compete. One thing to note, too — I don’t typically use garlands, wreaths, and trees from the same collection/line, but I DO try to stick to the same feel — flocked with flocked and green with green. I don’t love a flocked accent right next to a green tree because it doesn’t feel like they’re intended to be in the same setting.

Also, this is totally the “year of the tree topper”! (My mom told me to say that). I never use literal tree toppers but this year, while I still went with my usual concentrated picks-as-a-topper on some trees, I couldn’t resist a few 4-d style star toppers and love how they turned out! I use THIS silver one in the dining room, but also purchased the gold version for a different tree!
Unlike most of the trees I decorate, I went ultra simple on this flocked tree. I think the snowy needles are decor and embellishment, all on their own, and the tree even comes with some pinecones. But, I used no picks and no ribbon (I know!)…. The only addition I used was some of my favorite frosted and mercury glass ornaments.
Like the table centerpiece, my usual shiny silver tea service takes centerstage and is flanked by crystal candle sticks, but I used some long wood bead garland strands I had on hand to add a more earthy and organic element. I finished it off with just a few frosty ornaments that are present in the tree. I think sometimes, it’s easy to get stuck thinking you have to stick with the same vibe… things that “go together”. But, I like to mix styles and finishes and it helps to keep things from feeling too stark, too formal, or too casual.
I didn’t do anything crazy with the bar cart to give it a holiday feel. I added a couple classic nutcrackers, some of my fave wire string lights, and tossed a few ornaments in a bowl with one straggler below.

The Conversation Room
Meanwhile, on the other side of the entry…
Last year, the conversation room was painted but other than that, was barren and without furniture. We completed the room earlier this year (see the full reveal and details HERE) and I quickly decided this space would be the home to our most special memories. Remember the post on styling our glass cabinet with family mementos (HERE)? It holds our family ornament nostalgia tree (that got a size upgrade this year, in the 7.5’ version of our fave Costco Christmas tree!), toys, and all the best conversation starters. Here’s how our most special, sentimental space looks for Christmas this year…

Totally an extra step and not necessary, I did do a few things to anchor the tree and make it look a little more uniform. Our ornaments aren’t coordinated AT ALL (which I don’t think they should be), so I added some warm gold balls, plaid ribbon, and a few wooden picks throughout. If you decorate a single tree and have collected ornaments over the years, hopefully this shows you can have family memories and still use embellishments like ribbon and picks! That said, my mom keeps her family ornament tree — her sole tree — to ornaments only and I LOVE how special it looks!

While the entry had a large array of faux magnolia stems, I tucked a single faux stem (HERE) inside the small version of THIS black vase. If you want to get fancy, you can add ribbon to your vases but I preferred these in their plain state.

I have this year’s annual ornaments wrapped and ready to open, below the tree. Eliza is getting a set of THESE adorable paper dinosaurs (on sale right now), Dave is getting THIS bottlebrush set of safari animals to mark our first trip to the zoo, and there may be a special ornament collection down there for Gran Nan 😉 But, I can’t share that because she def. reads here, haha.

From this spot, you can see three Christmas trees — the conversation room family tree, the dining room tree, and then through the mirror, you can catch a peek of the main tree — the red and gold Christmas tree — in the living room (we’ll get to that in a little bit 😉 ).
The Powder Room
This bright space got a little drama too, just in a different way! I don’t typically “do” anything in the bathrooms for the holidays but I couldn’t resist grabbing a few bunches of these ilex berry branches from TJs.

A total fire moment, I am crushing on this vibrant red against the blue and white so. so. hard!
FYI – as a caveat, they are mildly poisonous, so use with caution around pets/kids. That said, I’ve had them in water for a week and there’s been no shedding or berry drop-age.
The Kitchen
You may have read a couple months ago that our kitchen will be seeing an accidental “phase II” upgrade soon (you can see the post where I chat about it HERE). Our kitchen cabinet contractor was actually ready to go a couple weeks ago, but I asked that we wait until January to move forward so we wouldn’t have to deal with the disrupt during the holidays.
The tiny butler’s pantry — the pass-through between the kitchen and dining room — already got a little backsplash facelift that you can (sort of) make out just beyond these seasonal bottles. Each Christmas season, we have an evening of “toasts” under the tree where we go around and say what we’re thankful for, and toast after each sentiment. I found these little initial espresso mugs last year for the occasion and Eliza adores them.
With so many functional kitchen items on display, I kept the kitchen simple. I swapped the runner back to THIS affordable jute runner, and added some cedar-style greens from Hobby Lobby in this terracotta vase (similar). I’ve used these stems for a few years so I was happy they had them again this year.

Some orange citrus with eucalyptus greenery and a favorite spiced cider candle (on sale right now!) scent round out this trio.

Lastly, I used a few bottlebrush trees from last year’s living room console table vignette — where varying shades of blue and green were mixed — on my pedestals. That’s it!

The Breakfast Nook
On the other side of the kitchen, my board collection has continued to grow and expand; I’m loving how they’ve spilled over into the breakfast nook area. Like other spaces, I used my fave faux magnolia stems — three are present here — and I pulled out a trio of my favorite silver reindeer. I used my regular garland and beefed it up a bit with live magnolia leaves, eucalyptus, and a few embellishments. While it doesn’t “match” the living room — and one major color isn’t present in this space — it definitely coordinated with all the other tones.

My black wooden bowl has already moved around three different rooms since this fall. For the holidays, I added a few champagne and clear/gold balls with more wood bead garland woven throughout. A bowl with all the things — from ornaments to greenery to bells — is my favorite easy centerpiece.

Using both bright cherry red and deep cranberry, and accessorizing with a warm gold, our vibrant main tree stands out against our new-this-year-white-living-room.

And while the tree itself is bold, bold, BOLD, I didn’t want to take the red too many other places in large doses. I wanted to leave the red and gold Christmas tress as the main area of impact and focal point and keep the rest of the room a little calmer and more relaxed.
Here’s a close-up of the detail. Along with the contrasting ribbon, the (tons) of berry picks keep the red and gold Christmas tree just a tad on the whimsical side.

I used the same Costco garland I have for the past several years but embellished it just a little different. Along with the basic strand of lit garland, I tucked in some pieces of those faux cedar-like stems I shared in the kitchen, live magnolia and eucalyptus, and red and gold berries. It’s amazing how much more beefy your garland can get, just adding a little here and there — I think I actually may like decorating my garland more than my trees, haha.

I’ve continued to use my big brass beverage tub for chopped logs — if I was using it exclusively for entertaining, I would have to keep it in the basement. I love that it’s functional 24/7 this way.
I switched up very little of my regular everyday decor — I added a holiday accent here and there but when it came to my shelves, especially, I wanted to keep them on the “cleaner” side — especially because the tree is kind of… a lot, haha.

I did carry just a touch of red over to the bookshelves with my balls-in-a-bowl-go-to. And as I’ve mentioned throughout the tour in other spaces, arranging the shiny balls in a raw wood bowl keeps everything balanced since I didn’t want to go full glam.
I kept the side and coffee table areas simple and “kid friendly”. Eliza has been amazing about not getting curious with the trees. She was really excited about the ornaments the first day or two but after a few reminders (FYI, our trees started going up over a month ago), she hasn’t tried to touch them since. We live and play in our house hard, but decor isn’t new to her. She doesn’t get too enamored with anything because she’s used to it.

The living room doesn’t “match” with the conversation room (peep to the back left), but it coordinates. All of my rooms are styled differently but I try to keep the rooms that connect to each other from feeling like the house is totally disjointed.
The shallow bowl tray from last year made another appearance this year. Eliza loves pulling books from here and putting them back so it’s great she can have a “hands-on” area. Also, just in case it has to be said, I don’t leave lit candles down low when she’s home 😉

While I added red berries to the garland on the banister facing the living room, I didn’t add red berries to the opposite banister facing the entry. They both have the same champagne ribbon and while they are the same, each strand best fits the decor in each respective space — no red on one side, but red on the other.
Our holiday cards from years past are displayed on the console table (do you save a card for yourself to do that?!) and while I still had the stock photo in this year’s frame when I took these photos, our 2021 cards just arrived so I’ve already added our latest to the mix!

There’s definitely some shine from the glass balls and beaded picks, but I kept glitter at a minimum in here this year. I wanted the living room to feel “fancier” than normal, but wanted to keep it kind of “flat” and natural, too. Using lots of my regular woven textures instead of lots of reflective metals helped keep the glitz down a bit.
I may say this and I definitely think this each year, but I think this year’s main tree — our red and gold Christmas tree — may be my favorite we’ve done.
The Bedroom
The bedroom has been… a journey. After the flood early in the year, this room became crammed with lots of plastic makeshift drawers, vanities, etc. While we still have some of that going on behind the camera, this is the most “normal” our room has felt in a long time. Our Bathroom still isn’t finished (we’re waiting on a backorder piece for our shower!) but I feel I can finally breathe in our room again! And, just in time because ready or not, those twinkles were coming in 😉
Also never shared because our room has been a wreck all year — we updated the chandelier (HERE) several months ago and I’m totally smitten over this fixture that’s been on my wishlist for years.

With a gold on gold on gold tree, I went with neutrals and brown tones — again, I’ve used these pillows in pillow schemes in the living room during other months of the year!
This tree was so fun to create because like the dining room Christmas tree, I approached it with a simpler construction. It’s made of gold tinsel (from Martha.com) and there’s no ribbon — just loads of different sized gold ball ornaments and gold and pearl beaded clamp-style sprays.

Eliza’s Room
And lastly… the nursery.
Eliza’s first year, I went all out. I literally spent several days, just working on her nursery Christmas decor. Were you here for that? Last year, I simplified a little and this year, I brought the difficulty level and time consumption way down! Instead of decking her entire room, I focused on a tree. I used coordinating crib sheets she already had and swapped in some neutral and patterned pillows from our arsenal.
For her last year with a nursery, before she graduates to a big girl room this coming year, I just went for fun. She is so into colors, so… I just gave them all to her.

I layered in stripes and big dots and small dots and it reminds me of this ruffle ribbon shirt from my childhood that we got from a local church Christmas crafts bazaar. One of those “you just had to be there” things, but if you were, you’d totally agree.
We use smart plugs (HERE) so each morning when I wake her up, she looks forward to “Echo, turn on Eliza’s tree”.

Dining Room

I look forward to this post every year! You are the total inspiration for all of my trees in my home! I am curious… how many ornaments would you estimate that you have on your red and gold tree and how many rolls of ribbon? You should write a book solely on how to properly decorate trees and garland!!!

I used a blend of old ornaments, along with some new ones. I always “over buy” what I think I may need…just in case! I will say that once I thought the tree was finished, I couldn’t resist adding additional ornaments and picks. I hope you have a wonderful holiday season!

With dogs and a toddler I don’t know how you do it. My puppy chewed up our living room rug. I have been looking for a inexpensive replacement. When I saw your conversation room rug, I jumped to the link and purchased right away. It said there are 8 in stock of my size 9 x 12 but after I purchased it say’s it’s back ordered. My question, will it be worth the wait? Do you still love yours? I purchased the ivory/ beige. What other colors are in it?

I want to thank you for the tutorial you put out on how to tuck ribbon into the tree, it definitely helped me step up my tree. I have one question though, while my ribbon looks perfect, my tree still doesn’t look as amazing as yours. I think the issue is I am not using enough ornaments. How many ornaments and picks would you use on a 7.5’ tree?

I wish I could give you a number of how many ornaments and picks that I use, but I typically blend new with what I already have…and then add more! I really like the rug in your master bedroom! The reviews mention shedding and difficult cleaning. How has your experience been? I don’t want to drop $1500 on a rug unless it’s going to be amazing!
Hi Amanda, Thank you for taking the time to visit! I’ve had that rug for several years and have loved it. Its weight is perfect for layering on carpet. I’ve note had an issue with shedding. Of course, when vacuuming, I never use beaters so that snags won’t occur.
