7 Tips to Create a Pink Nursery (without Having a LITERAL Pink Nursery)

We were moving full speed ahead on the playroom (find the design plan HERE)… until THIS happened. So, while those plans are on pause indefinitely until our restoration since the not-yet-a-playroom room is being used a a closet (dump), I had already started a (final?) nursery color refresh for spring/summer. I thought that once we finished the playroom, the start of a “big girl bedroom” wouldn’t be far behind and after taking inventory throughout our house and making note of what we already had in terms of blush accents and decor, I decided Eliza would finally get a pink nursery. When I first designed this space, it was 100% neutral. If you missed it, you can see the reveal HERE. I 100% am still so glad we went the direction we did in all things from the pieces we chose to the overall vibe and color palette. But, since then, it’s taken on a few (easy) slight adjustments to freshen up for seasons. With the neutral backdrop, it really has been so simple to take on incorporations of color. Today, I’m sharing our latest update with what may be her final baby room — a girly, blush pink nursery.

This is how her nursery started out — a backdrop of neutrals and whites…

And then last year around this time, we morphed into a blue girl nursery (see the full details in THIS post). It wasn’t overwhelmingly blue and only a few slight changes were made. And, until Christmas, this is how it stayed.

But a few weeks ago, with just a little modifying and a few changes, we went from blue to pink!

7 Easy Ways to Create a Pink Nursery

As I mentioned — and as you can see — while the prominent color changed to the opposite end of the spectrum, the switches were minor. These are the inexpensive, easy steps I took to turn this first neutral, then blue baby room into a pink nursery.

1. Bring in Pops of Pink with Pillows

By keeping the main pieces neutral, I look to the accents to bring in the new look. And as in most any room I re-dress for a season or new color scheme, I start with… the pillows 😉 I already had an arsenal of pink pillows and I love mixing corals with blush tones. The more patterns and textures, the better!

Not just for nurseries — you may remember when I dressed my bedroom in not-too-feminine pink hues…

While Eliza’s pillows play into a feminine, girly vibe, pink pillows can be as neutral or as frilly as you want, depending on how you accessorize around them and other patterns you incorporate. Here are a few pink pillows I’m loving for the warm months ahead.

Number One is a hefty linen fabric that I have in Eliza’s crib. Number Two is GORGEOUS, easy to mix, also comes in a lumbar option and is also from my favorite pillow source. Seriously, their fabrics and durability are incredible. Regardless of which color scheme you’re looking for, if you’ve never been to my favorite pillow shop, you can find tons of gorgeous quality pillows HERE. I am in love with the tassel detail on Number Seven — it’s also a great option to bring in some blush without a heavy assault of pink. Number 15 is a beautiful, soft pink mixed with ivory and I’m digging that fringe detail. Number 10 is a splurge but Number 12 and Number 20 are both budget finds on Amazon.

2. Throw Blankets are Practical

I think I now have at least 10 versions THIS soft, affordable, tasseled throw blanket in different colors. We keep them in just about every room of the house and this warm rose color (pink peony is the color, I believe) is beautiful. They wash easily and make perfect draping blankets for basket, sofas, benches and beds, but also awesome lap/cozying up blankets. Bringing in pillows (preferably the covers) and blankets also take up little storage space and can easily mix in with decor in other rooms throughout the house.

3. Florals are Fun

Unlike some colors, you can throw in a few faux (or live) flowers in tons of varieties and shades of pink are sure to take over. I brought out this cute little heart-shaped floral wreath I had in my Valentine’s storage and used it as a flower crown for Eliza’s sherpa bear rocker

I also pulled together a quick pink flower arrangement from my last trip to the grocery store.

And I couldn’t resist this cute little pint-sized azalea that I nestled inside a basket I had on hand — again, a find at the grocery store down the street.

4. Pom Pom Garland is a Whimsical Accessory

When I was looking for some pom pom garland for Eliza’s nursery (I landed on THIS adorable felt strand of varying shades of green and stars) I started browsing the shop and loved THIS cute ivory and blush ball garland — perfect for a sweet pink nursery accent! You can choose from lots of lengths and adjust the balls to your preferred distance.

While I draped it across an existing piece of statement art, it would be sweet as a crib addition or even as decor in a bowl on a shelf.

5. Put Your Fav Fashion Forward

Dressing Eliza is one of my favorite things. Ever. And gosh, there are so many adorable outfits and pieces for little girls, there’s nothing wrong with displaying some of those tiny wardrobe favorites. If you’re looking for ways to punctuate a color theme, this is a perfect, easy opportunity to go on-theme.

Admittedly, THIS sweet baby boutique is an obsession of ours mine, we have this little cardigan in five colors, I believe. They have the most adorable knits, dresses and more and you can get 10% off your first purchase HERE.

6. Focus the Attention On the On-Color Toys

I am by no means suggesting you remove toys that don’t fit your “color scheme”! Oh my word, Eliza has all the primary colors all over, but we try to keep most toys stashed in bins and corralled in baskets and drawers. But, I love keeping some favorites on display and if you’re going for a certain vibe or color, the toys you choose to display can either punctuate and emphasize that look, or detract from it.

And, not everything has to be a literal shade of an exact color. Eliza’s little collection of Cuddle & Kind mermaids displayed in her wicker doll pram aren’t exclusively pink, but it feels pink (if that makes sense). She sleeps with all four of these every night!

7. Art Moments Can Punctuate the Pink

While I have totally purchased new art in the past to bring in more of the color I was going for, in this instance, I took a small print that was already in Eliza’s room, low on her bookshelf, and just placed it in a more prominent spot on her dresser.

For low-cost/free ways to bring in art moments in a color scheme you’re looking to introduce, look at your gift wrap and see if there are any possibilities to frame a sweet swatch. Or, you can find inexpensive print-ables on Etsy and print them at home. These are tips, not just for a pink nursery or kids room, but for any spot in your house.

When all these touches come together, the result is an organic incorporation of color, without being too matchy-matchy. Eliza’s little bedroom is officially a pink nursery, without being a literal pink nursery, doused in shades of rose and blush.

As I mentioned at the beginning of the post, this may be the last time we update Eliza’s little baby girl nursery before moving onto a “big girl bedroom” but we still have several projects to finish first! Like… the dining room and conversation room… the playroom… and apparently, now the master bathroom (and peripheral rooms like the master closet?) To make sure you catch the reveals of the projects (several coming soon!) subscribe to receive email updates at the bottom of this post.
