I would like a (virtual) show of hands. Can you relax in your home if it is a mess? With 349875 things lingering on your to-do list? If you said “yes”, I am jealous… I don’t operate that way. I would love to be able to, but I can’t. If I’m going to relax, my surroundings have to be relaxing. Well, the same goes for commencing the holidays without being decorated for the holidays. For the last few weeks, the troops (by “troops”, I mean my husband and I) have been rallying around the house with garland, glitter, and tree limbs. With our home in a constant state of transition and I’ll be honest, pigsty battleground, I’ve been in holiday denial. But, as of this weekend, our house is finally decked and overnight, I fell into the Christmas spirit. *Cue the singing angels* (See, total holiday spirit! ;)) To celebrate, I am inviting you into our home to see what we’ve been up to. It’s Christmas home tour day and I’ve joined some of my favorite people for the Holiday Home Showcase, this year’s home tour blog hop!
UPDATE: Check out Kelley Nan’s current Christmas Home Tour for 2017 HERE!
To those of you joining me from Erin’s gorgeous, classic holiday home at Sunny Side Up, welcome! If you’re a regular, I’m so glad you’re here. And for those of you who aren’t sure how you ended up on the tour, I hope you’ll stick around and visit again! At the bottom of the post, I will be sending you on to the next stop. NOTE: A full source list and all the room details are included at the bottom of the post.
Aren’t a big Christmas decorator? No worries. I’ve included a few quick, easy ways to bring in just a hint of the holiday 😉 Thanks to the huge bin of Christmas tree clippings at Lowe’s, we were able to really make the urns flanking the front door more robust with greenery. (They were free and set out for the taking- my favorite kind of decor. ) I started with some faux branches and then stuffed my urns with the fresh stuff until I was satisfied. There’s a mixture of faux pine and cedar and real Fraser Fir – I don’t discriminate; I’ll take it all! If you were around for my home tour last Christmas, you will likely see some similarities on my front porch.
We’ve kept it traditional but added our DIY flocked Christmas tree which appeared in our dining room last year. The railings are also lined with higher quality garland from King of Christmas.
I put these red pillows out at our yard sale this summer for $2… and there were no takers. They were in perfect condition so instead of donating, I put them in the “maybe-one-day-holiday” pile… I’m so glad I did.
Just inside, I positioned my new lantern my Aunt Susan gifted me over Thanksgiving. This will be a staple through all seasons but for the winter months, I placed a few frosted pine cones surrounding the pillar candle.
To the right are the stairs and the dining room…
…and to the left is our sitting room.
A quick note- I used the same faux garland as last year throughout our house but mixed in real cedar garland. I better find a spritzing bottle quick though because I still haven’t given my strands any misting baths! Everything that you will see today (railings and arrangements) took about 60 feet.
I had one outcast, faux, snowy branch in the basement and didn’t know what to do with it. I was leaning toward leaving it downstairs. Instead, I cut it into several pieces and mixed it in my fresh wintry floral arrangements.
I often see comments that I must not have any pets… well, this post is my proof! Not only do we have them, but they basically rule our house. Yes, even on the white stuff haha
Through the French doors is a guest bedroom (dubbed “Nan’s room” after my mom). With a neutral color scheme, it only took a few simple touches to bring a little Christmas into this space.
The perks of having holly bushes…
The dining room is one of my favorite spaces this season. I went for themed blue and white, comprised predominately of pieces I already owned. I shared the details of this Balsam Hill Christmas tree last week (HERE) in the Parade of Christmas trees but am now excited to share the rest of the room.
The velvet WillaSkye navy pillows from my fall living room were the perfect contrast to the lighter and royal blues. I stand by my belief that any colors can be made into holiday colors.
I kept decor in the kitchen is simple… I tried to fight the urge to line every flat surface with something sparkly to give my heart the clutter-free atmosphere it truly desired – even through the holidays. I originally had a big, gold/silver/ornate/glittered/etc. wreath hanging on my vent hood. It was gaudy… large… more than a little obnoxious. I love “gaudy” and “obnoxious” but it never felt quite right and I made a switch to a small pine/eucalyptus number.
Over Thanksgiving, my brother brought 20 lbs of pecans for the family. I attribute pecans to memories of holiday gatherings hosted by my grandmother and today, my mom is the Pecan queen. Shelling pecans in our family during the holidays can probably be compared to cookie baking traditions in most others. In the midst of battling dark, dreary weather on this day, I took a timeout and finished shelling my entire portion.
Adjoined to our kitchen is the breakfast nook. Again, I have plenty of shiny pretties in here but practiced restraint and incorporated some more natural elements.
Our special tree of sentimental ornaments sits in the corner; the two partying moose cuties are our new annual ornaments for this year, gifted by my mom.
A peek into the great room from the kitchen… Instead of the greenery wrapped lantern chains, I fashioned some simple silver bows.
Oh, and the stool-back wreaths! I picked up about seven of these minis last year after Christmas at Michael’s for 90% off. I originally had a plan to use these on the dining chairs but that would have called for twice the effort. 😉
Our main Christmas tree in the great room has the exact same ornaments and picks as last year but I went heavier on white ribbon this year to give just little different flavor. It is not flocked… just stuffed with ornaments and trimmings.
Maggie and Mister are already laying under the tree nightly, waiting for Santa.
Rather impatiently, it seems.
Another glimpse of the effect the cedar garland gave the faux greenery.
Upstairs on the catwalk gives the best view in the house.
Dipping into my office, I also shared the details of this blush and gold themed number on last week’s Christmas tree hop (HERE).
The oldest sibling in our clan, Penny, prefers pink.
I took on my office this fall and totally made it over for the One Room Challenge in six weeks. You can see the full reveal HERE.
Across from my work domain is our master bedroom. I wanted a natural, classic, vibe in here and went with red, plaid, and lots of berries.
This flocked tree from King of Christmas was gorgeous all on its own so it was an easy decision to go lighter than my usual on the decor. At 9′ tall, she fits perfectly in the vaulted ceiling sitting area.
I used poly-fill to give the illusion of mounded snow and in sticking to the nature theme, brought in red apples
I hope you enjoyed hanging out in our home for a bit. If this was your first time visiting and you would like to see more, you can sign up for my emails at the bottom of the post 😉 Next up in the tour is my friend Bree at Z Design at Home. The cranberry accents in her living room are brilliant and I’m already wondering how/where I can incorporate that gorgeous accent next year! Head on over HERE and tell her I sent you 😉
